What is WWOOF?
WWOOF (World Wide Opportunities on Organic Farms) offers people the chance to volunteer on organic farms. Volunteers (WWOOFers) provide labor to Host Farmers (Hosts) in exchange for food and accommodation. WWOOFers benefit from the experience through the process of cultural exchange as well as being able to discuss and learn how to practice organic agriculture. Host Farmers benefit through the help they receive from volunteers to sustain their farms. WWOOF is a volunteer program and no money can ever be exchanged between a host farmer and volunteer.
WWOOF Romania was established in 2008 with 3 host farms and now it has grown to include 48 host farms. In 2013, we joined the Federation of WWOOF Organizations (FoWO), which is a global network of 40 national WWOOF organizations that promotes the organic food movement and the benefits of knowledge exchange on farms. Our role is to provide information about organic and traditional farms in Romania and facilitate collaboration between WWOOFers and Host Farmers. So far, we have had more than 1,000 volunteers from over 30 countries help on farms here.
Romania represents a mix of modern developments and tradition, most notably in peasant agriculture which is still practiced by most of the rural population. It's full of wise peasants and small villages which have a special charm. The country displays amazing beauty through mountain ranges, virgin forests, nature reserves, beaches and the Danube Delta. Romania's language (a latin language like Italian), its mix of people (Romanians, Hungarians, Saxons, and Rroma), its foods and local celebrations offer visitors a truly distict experience like no other in Eastern Europe.
WWOOF Romania is a program of Eco Ruralis, a grassroots member association made up of peasants, gardeners and consumers who support traditional peasant farming in Romania. It was founded in 2009 in Cluj-Napoca by small-scale farmers from several regions of the country. Eco Ruralis does political advocacy work, raises public awareness and forms coalitions that strengthen the movement to establish a farming system based on agroecology and food sovereignty.
