(romanian description at the end)
Hello!
My name is Paula (26) and together with my husband, Rareș (24), we are building a simple and meaningful life in the Romanian countryside.
Although I grew up in a village, surrounded by my grandmother’s large vegetable garden and my grandfather’s dairy farm with dozens of cows, as a teenager I dreamed of city life, apartments, comfort and entertainment. After many years in big cities, life brought me back to my roots, and I couldn’t be happier.
This is our first year living in the countryside on our own, learning every day how to care for the land, grow food and raise animals responsibly. Our goal is to produce as much of our own food as possible using natural methods, while also creating healthy homemade products for sale.
We live in the village of Iojib, in Satu Mare County, on a 2,900 m² property. We share the homestead with my mother and my grandparents, who live in a separate house on the property. We enjoy spending time together and sharing knowledge passed down through generations.
Animals are an important part of our daily life. Currently we care for:
🐔 90 chickens
🦃 4 turkeys
🦆 23 ducks
🐄 2 cows
🐇 2 rabbits
🐖 12 pigs
🐕 1 Belgian Malinois dog
🐈 4 cats
All animals live outdoors as part of the farm environment.
We love meeting people from different cultures, exchanging ideas, learning new skills and sharing the beauty of rural Romanian life. If you enjoy nature, gardening, animals, homemade food and authentic countryside experiences, we would be happy to welcome you to our little homestead.
Life here follows the rhythm of the seasons and there is always something meaningful to do.
Depending on the time of year, volunteers may help with gardening tasks such as preparing beds, mulching, planting, watering, weeding and harvesting vegetables. We also grow and process a variety of fruits from our orchard, including plums, cherries, sour cherries and apricots.
A big part of our project is food preservation. Throughout the season we make jams, syrups, dried fruits and vegetables, canned products, frozen foods and many other homemade preparations to enjoy during the winter months.
Animal care is another important part of daily life. Tasks may include feeding animals, providing fresh water, cleaning shelters, collecting eggs, caring for our cow, chickens, ducks, turkeys, pigs, rabbits, cats and dog, and occasionally helping with milking.
There are also general homestead activities such as mowing grass, planting flowers, maintaining outdoor spaces, organizing tools and improving the property.
We especially welcome people who enjoy hands-on work, learning traditional skills, spending time outdoors and experiencing authentic rural life in Romania
WWOOFers will stay in our family home and become part of our daily life. We offer a private guest room with a double bed, suitable for one person or a couple.
We usually share all meals together as a family and believe that food is one of the best ways to connect, exchange stories and learn about different cultures.
Most of our food comes directly from the homestead: fresh vegetables from the garden, seasonal fruits from our orchard, eggs, dairy products and meat from animals raised on the farm. Throughout the year we also enjoy homemade jams, preserves, dried fruits and vegetables, and other traditional foods prepared from our harvests.
We normally eat two main meals per day, but we are flexible and can adapt to three meals if preferred. Vegetarian meals can also be provided if requested. As an Orthodox Christian family, we also have periods of fasting during the year, when our meals are entirely plant-based. During these times, volunteers can experience traditional Romanian vegan dishes and home-cooked fasting recipes.
We are passionate about good food, simple living and quality ingredients. Expect home-cooked meals, seasonal produce, fresh milk, plenty of fruit when in season, and of course, specialty coffee for coffee lovers.
Our goal is not simply to host volunteers, but to welcome them as temporary members of the family and share an authentic Romanian countryside experience together.
We enjoy spending most of our free time outdoors. Some of our favorite activities include hiking, forest walks, fishing, mushroom foraging, gathering wild edible plants, gardening, cooking, barbecues with friends and exploring the countryside.
We love sharing meals, stories and experiences with people from different cultures, and we often spend evenings around good food, conversation and specialty coffee.
The area around our village offers beautiful rural landscapes, quiet country roads, forests, small rivers and plenty of opportunities for walking, cycling, fishing and enjoying nature. Depending on the season, we can also go mushroom picking, forage wild plants or simply relax outdoors and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of village life.
If you enjoy nature, simple living, outdoor activities and authentic local experiences, you will probably feel right at home here.
