Provision is situated in the Western part of Transylvania. We are nestled in the foothills of the Western Carpathians, or Apuseni Mountains in a small oasis of fruit and walnut trees on the divide of wild mountain forest and gently rolling agricultural land. In the mountains just bordering the village to the west, bears, wolves and lynxes still roam in a vast stretch of nature preserve connected to the famous Padis plateau, where hikers and spelunkers like to explore a complex terrain of mountains, rivers and caves. The rolling hills on the Eastern side of our village is where local smallholders have been cultivating the fields for centuries.
Ce se cultiva la ferma:
We cultivate and grow food and beverages to feed our own family, our volunteers, friends and guests. We raise goats for milk, chickens for eggs, rabbits and other fowl for meat.
Our farm and orchard (0.25 ha) are in a small village of around 100 similar traditional farmhouses. The fields for agriculture and haying are situated around the village. We use about 0.3 ha for crops and a variable amount for hay.
Luni in care se accepta voluntari:
May through October
Work on the farm: daily tasks; animal care; one draft horse, four dairy goats (milking), chickens, rabbits, dog, cat, cooking, cheese making, cleaning… Regular jobs like bread baking, butter churning, gardening… seasonal work; haying, planting, growing, harvesting, canning & preserving, butchering, juicing & distilling… Projects like natural building, infrastructure improvement, farm upkeep… Work with the village community: Our village is a peasant community struggling for its existence in the speed of modern ‘development’. Many of the inhabitants (around 100 in total) are older (though many of them still farming!) and in need of help. We very much encourage our interns to partake in the work of these villagers, help where it is needed. We ourselves do this as well. This is a great opportunity to do social service, learn skills first hand and have wonderful cultural exchanges. Work for our school of self sufficient living: During summer season we provide courses and workshops for Provision. This brings along a fair amount of organization and work. Our interns can help to keep our farm running smoothly as these courses are happening, and at the same time have the opportunity to join and learn from the courses/workshops as well. Work schedule: Summertime is a busy season. Some days will be fuller and longer then others. We work with the flow of season, weather, ongoing projects and personal energy. Weekends are off and create the opportunity to take care of personal needs. Sundays we respect the day of rest of the community.
Depending on availability there is room in a separate house, in a small caravan in the orchard or in the haybarn! Camping is also possible. We have limited space and longer stays are preferred.
We choose to eat as organic and local as possible. Most of what we eat we grow, produce and preserve ourselves, meat included. The rest comes from our village or close surroundings, except things like rice, spaghetti, some oils, sugar, salt…
Cateva cuvinte despre familie:
We have bought a traditional, all natural, farmhouse in 2009 at the foothills of the Apuseni Mountains (Western Carpathians), Transylvania. Since then we work with our hands to enrich our lives with peasant wealth and submerge ourselves into local rural culture and experience. We choose to work without power tools or other such modern conveniences. In 2012 we founded Provision, the Transylvanian School for Self-Sufficient Living, in order to provide the opportunity for equally motivated and interested people from all over the world to learn with and from us about the rich existing peasant knowledge and skills still used in our village. We have a son who will turn three years old this spring, so we stress that this is a family and child-friendly environment.
Animale de companie:
At this moment we have one drafthorse, six goats, nine chickens, six rabbits, a dog, a cat and a pigeon.
