Forest Garden in the Hollow

Hi fellow woofers, I'm Örs, currently a resident of Zsobok (Jebucu) a village in the Kalotaszeg region of Transylvania. I have here a small piece of land where I’m creating a miniature forest- and botanical garden, basically a self-sustaining ecosystem. After finishing a PhD in Philosophy I work as a church organist in the neighbouring village, so I try to create and maintain bonds not just between different plants and natural phenomena but between people as well.
At the moment, I’m establishing a permaculture forest garden with as many perennials as possible, along with an underground greenhouse (walipini). This autumn my focus is on preparing the vegetable garden, planting different layers of the forest garden, and shaping the walipini. There will also be some landscaping projects, such as building paths, stairs, and terraces. As a volunteer, you’ll get hands-on experience with plant interactions, seasonal thinking and also working with stone and wood.
In the house there’s a guest room, and we’ll cook one hot meal together each day. Many of my friends nearby are farmers, and their farms can be visited; great opportunities to learn about farming life in the region and to buy fresh, local, seasonal produce.
The area is wonderful for hiking and cycling. The town of Bánffyhunyad (Huedin) is famous for its Tuesday market, Szentkirály (Sâncraiu) has a small 25-meter swimming pool, and in Egeres (Aghires) you’ll find the well-known Blue Lagoon quarry lake. I enjoy visiting these places myself, but you’re also welcome to simply relax in the garden, read, or enjoy some quiet time in nature.
